For a brand best known for its presence in offices and commercial interiors, opening a flagship retail store is a meaningful moment. For Humanscale, the launch of its Shanghai flagship signals a new way of engaging with consumers, one shaped not by specification or technical explanation, but by experience.
Located in Hongqiao Qianwan InCity MEGA, the Shanghai flagship is conceived as a highly visible, public-facing retail environment. Rather than operating as a traditional showroom, the space is designed to invite consumers inside, encouraging exploration and interaction. The store reflects Humanscale’s intent to translate decades of ergonomic expertise into a retail setting that feels intuitive, accessible, and relevant to everyday life.
“Retail allows us to reach a broad spectrum of consumers,” said Heather Fennimore, Co-Founder and President of Humanscale. “This space reflects our belief that design, comfort, and movement are not trends, but essential elements of modern living, especially in a global city like Shanghai.”

A Space to Experience Humanscale Living
Spanning nearly 1,300 square feet, the flagship store showcases Humanscale’s ecosystem of ergonomic solutions, including seating, sit-to-stand desks, monitor arms, and lighting, within an open, carefully curated layout. Products are positioned in a cohesive environment that emphasises comfort, movement, and ease of use. Visitors are encouraged to sit, adjust, and experience the products directly, rather than read about their performance.
This experiential approach aligns with the evolution of premium retail across design-driven categories. Increasingly, brands are expected to communicate value through feeling rather than feature lists. In the Shanghai store, ergonomics is something you feel immediately, from the way a chair moves with the body to how a workspace sustains comfort throughout the day.
Rather than relying on complex controls or manual adjustments, Humanscale’s approach to ergonomics is grounded in decades of research into how people naturally sit, move, and work. Its products are designed to respond automatically to the user, delivering consistent comfort, balance, and support without conscious effort. This philosophy of intuitive ergonomics has defined the brand for decades and continues to guide its product development today, shaping products that adapt seamlessly to everyday work and modern living.

Human-Centred Design for the Way We Live
This flagship store also reflects a broader recalibration of Humanscale’s retail strategy in China. While the company has long maintained a strong commercial presence in the region, consumer interest in health, comfort, and quality of life has grown significantly, particularly in fast-paced urban centres such as Shanghai. As work and living environments increasingly overlap, demand for products that support well-being throughout the day has expanded beyond the office into the home.

“Retail becomes a platform for education and trust,” said Douglas Wang, Senior Retail Sales Manager of Humanscale. “By situating the flagship within a major shopping centre alongside lifestyle and design brands, we get closer to the consumer.” The store allows consumers to understand the brand through firsthand experience.
The Shanghai flagship builds on Humanscale’s earlier retail presence in China, including the opening of its first flagship store in Hangzhou in 2023. Together, these locations reflect a growing commitment to consumer-facing retail as a long-term strategy, one that complements the brand’s established strength in commercial environments.
As Humanscale opens its Shanghai flagship, the company views the space not simply as a retail destination but as a foundation for long-term presence and dialogue in the Chinese market, anchored by design, performance, and purpose, and reflecting its continued evolution and confidence in the market’s future.
In an increasingly competitive retail landscape, the Shanghai store signals Humanscale's intent to grow across APAC by creating spaces that make comfort, movement, and thoughtful design integral to everyday life.
