When a Fortune 500 semiconductor company at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence set out to build its new 209,000-square-foot office and engineering laboratory in Penang, Malaysia, the goal went beyond expanding physical space. The global microchip device company sought a workplace that embodied its culture of innovation—one that would attract top talent, foster collaboration, and inspire employees to return to the office.

After more than two decades in Penang, the company had outgrown its existing facilities. Rapid growth in research and global business services demanded a new kind of environment—technically advanced yet unmistakably human-centric. The challenge was to design a space that could support complex engineering work while prioritising the well-being of the people who drive it. “The vision was to create a space that inspires innovation while keeping people at the center,” says Adeline See, Design Director at JLL Design Malaysia, which led the interior concept. “They wanted an environment that feels open, collaborative, and supportive—somewhere teams can do their best work every day.”

Located within the seafront development GBS by the Sea in Penang’s IC Design and Digital Park, the new office houses more than 1,200 employees and integrates engineering labs, collaboration zones, and wellness-oriented amenities. JLL’s design balances technical precision with warmth, creating a workplace that supports advanced operations while promoting comfort and focus. Ergonomics quickly became central to that vision. Engineers spend long hours in front of multiple screens, and workstation design directly affects concentration and fatigue.

To provide consistent comfort without complexity, JLL partnered with Humanscale. Each workstation features Humanscale’s World LM chair, whose weight-sensitive recline automatically adapts to each user, along with the M/Flex for M2.1 dual monitor arm, which allows effortless adjustment. Together, these solutions create an ergonomic foundation for more than a thousand desks without the need for manuals or training.

The simplicity of the setup aligned with the company’s operational goals. In a facility of this scale, even small inefficiencies matter. “Our goal was to help create an environment where good posture happens effortlessly,” explains Kessey Tong, Sales Manager at Humanscale Malaysia. “Here, ergonomics wasn’t about luxury—it was about enabling people to focus on their work without discomfort or distraction.”

Sustainability also guided product selection. In line with the company’s global environmental commitments, the project team prioritised long-lasting, low-impact furnishings with verified material transparency. Humanscale provided detailed environmental documentation, including Living Product Challenge certification data demonstrating that its manufacturing processes offset more resources than they consume. Both the World LM chair and M/Flex for M2.1 monitor arms are made using recycled aluminum and steel, are free from Red List chemicals, and are designed for recyclability at end of life. These credentials complemented the client’s emphasis on responsible sourcing and reduced lifecycle impact. “We looked for products that are intuitive, durable, and flexible enough to support a variety of users,” notes Adeline. “Humanscale’s solutions met those criteria and reinforced our standards for environmental stewardship.”

The completed Penang office reflects these priorities in every detail. Natural light and coastal views foster a sense of calm, while adjustable workstations and collaborative zones encourage movement and interaction. The consistent use of ergonomic seating and monitor arms across departments ensures an equal experience — each employee benefits from the same level of comfort and functionality. For the company, that consistency sends a clear message: people are their most valuable asset.

Since opening, the facility has become a benchmark for the company’s regional workplaces. Employees describe it as energising and supportive, with improved comfort during long project cycles. The new environment also symbolises confidence in Malaysia’s growing role within the global semiconductor ecosystem. The investment affirms that innovation depends not only on cutting-edge technology, but also on the spaces that nurture it.

As international firms expand in Southeast Asia, the Penang office illustrates a broader shift. Regional workplaces are no longer viewed merely as cost-efficient extensions of headquarters, but as vital centers of talent and creativity. “What makes this project special is that it brings global standards of workplace design to Penang,” says Kessey. “It shows how companies can create environments in Asia that are as high-performing as they are human-centric.”

For the client, the Penang office sets a new standard for how engineering environments can unite performance and well-being. For JLL and Humanscale, it demonstrates how thoughtful collaboration can translate ambitious goals into design reality. And for the region, it signals that ergonomic, sustainable design is becoming an expectation rather than a luxury.

As Kessey reflects, “When a company invests in the comfort and health of its people, it’s investing in their performance. That belief shaped this workplace from the start — and it shows.”
