On November 14th at its 2011 Visionaries! Gala, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) honored Humanscale Founder and CEO, Robert King, with its prestigious 2011 Visionaries! Design Award for his lifelong pursuit of making complicated things simple. The evening's other honorees were Vladimir Kagan, legendary designer; Denis Abrams, President of Benjamin Moore; and the late Jean-Louis Dumas, who created the modern global brand for his family business Hermès.
MAD explores how art and design intersect in the visual arts today, with particular attention to contemporary creativity and the ways in which artists and designers from around the world transform materials. The Visionaries! Gala is MAD's most important annual event, with more than 500 guests—including arts patrons, artists, designers and noted corporate and civic leaders—attending each year.
In the 29 years since King founded Humanscale, the company has been the innovation leader in a number of product categories, setting new performance standards for product categories ranging from seating to lighting. Achieving more with less, Humanscale's products have been honored with more than 100 international design awards since 2007, and featured in the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
Past Visionaries! Award recipients have included such iconic design leaders as Martha Stewart, CEO, Martha Stewart Living; Michael Graves, Architect; Lella and Massimo Vignelli, Designers; Shelly Lazarus, Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide; and Herbert V. Kohler, CEO, The Kohler Co.
