Liberty Side Chair Now in Production

Revolutionary Design by Niels Diffrient Offers Automatic Lumbar Support and More

Karen Brooking

New York — Humanscale’s Liberty Side chair, companion to the multi-award winning Liberty Task and Conference chair line, is now in full production. Developed by legendary designer Niels Diffrient, the Liberty Side chair offers beautiful styling and uncompromising comfort for side chair applications.

Featuring Humanscale’s revolutionary Form-Sensing Mesh Technology, the Liberty collection boasts tri-panel backrest construction using non-stretch mesh to provide body-fitting comfort and lumbar support without manual adjustments or exterior devices—a feat which cannot be achieved by chairs using a single panel of stretch mesh.
The Liberty Side chair offers a mesh seat with a frameless front edge for added comfort, while the pivoting backrest allows for a gentle recline and self-adjusting support. Liberty’s frame is available in black, silver or polished aluminum.
Liberty’s translucent mesh textiles — developed by textile designer Elizabeth Whelan to meet the unique and demanding requirements of the chair — surpass the performance criteria for contract seating textiles, and meet a variety of environmental standards in both the United States and Europe.
In addition to offering superior comfort, quality and beauty, the Liberty Side chair was designed with sustainability in mind. It is made predominantly of 100% recycled die-cast aluminum, which has high scrap value and can be infinitely recycled. Overall, the Liberty Side chair is constructed of 85% recycled content and is 99% recyclable.
While the Liberty Task and Conference chairs have earned numerous awards since their 2004 introduction, the Liberty Side chair has been recognized in its own right, with accolades including: Innovations Award from Buildings magazine, Best of NeoCon Gold Award, IIDEX Gold award, I.D. Design Distinction Award and the Chicago Athenaeum’s GOOD DESIGN® Award. In addition, the Liberty Side chair, the Liberty Task chair, and selections from Liberty’s Luminesce mesh line are currently featured in Design Life Now: National Design Triennial 2006, an exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, in New York City, featuring the most noteworthy design innovations from 2003 through 2006. The exhibit is open through July 2007.
