Horizon LED Task Light Earns Prestigious Red Dot Award

International Jury Recognizes Task Light for High Design Quality

New York, March 15, 2011— For the second consecutive year, Humanscale has been honored with the prestigious Red Dot Award for Product Design. Selected among the category’s 4,433 entries from 60 countries, the Horizon LED Task Light impressed the Red Dot’s international panel of expert judges with its outstanding degree of innovation, function and striking visual aesthetic.

Presented by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany, the annual Red Dot Award is the largest and most renowned design competition in the world. The Red Dot has been a universally recognized symbol for design excellence since 1955 and marks only the most outstanding product designs.

Humanscale joins a select group of the industry’s design leaders to earn the celebrated Red Dot for two consecutive years. In 2010, Humanscale received the Best of the Best Red Dot Award for the Diffrient World chair. Horizon’s 2011 Red Dot demonstrates Humanscale’s continuing commitment to innovative design.

The first task light to utilize Thin Film LED Technology, Horizon produces an ultra-wide footprint of warm, glare-free 3000K light—perfect for ergonomic illumination and beautiful light in any environment. Its built-in dimmer control offers seven levels of adjustable illumination to allow users to customize light intensity according to individual tasks and preferences. The spherical joints in Horizon’s head and base facilitate smooth, fluid and effortless positioning. The lamp’s head offers a full range of adjustability in all axes and variable height control to position the light exactly where it’s needed.

Created by award-winning designers Peter Stathis and Michael McCoy for Humanscale, Horizon combines two great traditions in modern design: platonic minimalism and organic form. The task light’s design is composed of three main components: an ultra-thin, rectangular lamp head; an elegant round base; and a minimal support stem connected to the base and lamp head by spherical joints. An organic, membrane-like skin forms the cover for the lens and base, leaving no exposed wiring or mechanical fasteners to distract from the luminous beauty of the light. The resulting form is a unique hybrid of architectural rectilinear and natural organic forms.

Horizon adds the 2011 Red Dot Award to its growing collection of honors, which includes an FX International Interior Design Award; a Best of Boutique Award; an Interior Design Best of Year Award; a NeoCon East People’s Choice Award; a Buildings Magazine Innovation Award; and an IIDEX/NeoCon Canada Innovation Award.
