2009 GOOD DESIGN Awards Presented to Four Humanscale Products

Karen Brooking

NEW YORK, December 30, 2009 — Humanscale’s Diffrient World Chair, Element LED task light, Diffrient Technology Light and M2 monitor arm have won prestigious GOOD DESIGN awards from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. The oldest competition of its kind, GOOD DESIGN has evaluated entries based on innovation, form, materials and construction, concept, function, utility and aesthetic appeal since 1950.

An award winner in GOOD DESIGN’s Furniture category, the Diffrient World Chair represents ultimate simplicity in a high-performance task chair. Made from just eight major parts and weighing only 25 pounds, the Diffrient World chair achieves Humanscale’s signature weight-sensitive recline through a revolutionary new design that functions without a mechanism. By achieving high levels of performance and functionality with one-third the parts of traditional high-performance task chairs, the Diffrient World chair is assured of long-term durability and unmatched sustainability.

An award winner in GOOD DESIGN’s Lighting category, Element features groundbreaking advancements in LED technology, and is the only solution of its kind to meet all the Department of Energy’s criteria for an LED task light. In addition to minimal environmental impact, Element features a compact design, effortless adjustment, an extremely long life, and exceptional light output while using just 7 watts of power. Unlike current-generation LED lights, Element delivers on the promise of LED technology.

Also earning an award in GOOD DESIGN’s Lighting category, the Diffrient Technology Light features fully integrated power outlets and an optional data port for multi-functional task lighting convenience. Additional benefits include energy efficiency, one-touch positioning for ergonomic use, and engineering precision. The Technology Light’s standard screw-in socket accommodates the latest environmentally conscious compact fluorescent bulbs.

And picking up a GOOD DESIGN award in the Electronics category, the M2 monitor arm boasts an exceptionally streamlined aesthetic and a groundbreaking design innovation. Utilizing a high-performance mechanical spring—instead of a bulky gas cylinder—the M2 offers dynamic adjustability and a remarkably long serviceable life in an ultra-slim and eco-conscious design.

The Chicago Athenaeum received GOOD DESIGN entries from 48 countries. The Diffrient World Chair, Element LED task light, Diffrient Technology Light and M2 monitor arm will be featured in the GOOD DESIGN show this June in Chicago.
