NEW YORK, December 4, 2009 — Humanscale’s Liberty chair received the ‘Best Seat’ distinction and Humanscale’s flagship Freedom chair won a special sustainability award from the 2009 ComfortSeating awards.
The ComfortSeating awards are presented by the ErgoCert/Italian Ergonomics Association Udine in connection with Italy’s Udine University. ErgoCert was the first—and remains the most important—ergonomics certification body in Europe.
Evaluated on a number of criteria including sustainability, usability of controls, and several comfort measures, Liberty earned the highest overall score in the ComfortSeating field of entries. The test results for each criterion were combined to achieve each chair’s total score, which included a ‘Comfort perceived by users’ test that was judged by an independent panel of 30 testers. By earning ‘Best Seat,’ Liberty bested a field that included most high-performance task chairs currently on the market.
Featuring revolutionary Form-Sensing Mesh Technology, Liberty provides tailor-made lumbar support for 95% of users without clunky external devices and manual adjustments. This unique tri-panel mesh solution complements Liberty’s dynamic recline mechanism, which encourages healthy, spontaneous movement that reduces spinal disc pressure and associated long-term health risks. For added support and comfort, Liberty’s armrests are attached to the backrest—not the seat pan—to move with the body as the user reclines, ensuring complete upper body support throughout the day.
Freedom’s award for ‘Best Product for Environmental Sustainability’ was based on certified technical documentation, which included the percentage of recycled and recyclable materials.
Designed with the environment in mind, the Greenguard-Certified Freedom chair contains 62% recycled material and is 90% recyclable. Constructed primarily of aluminum—which boasts high scrap value and can be infinitely recycled—Freedom contains far fewer parts than most high-end task chairs and weighs just 35 pounds. The chair is designed for easy disassembly and can help projects earn valuable points toward LEED certification.
